Presentation of Team Berg

Dean candidate Berg's background

Collaboration and management have inspired me in research, teaching, and laboratory operation through my education (cand. med. UiO 1986, dr. med. UiO 1995, specialist in medical biochemistry 2004), and emplyment in medical positions, and as a professor of medicine and senior physician at OUS in 20 % position since 2007. I am motivated by setting goals and working to achieve them together with my colleagues.

I have research management experience from the Department of Medical Biochemistry and from the former Division for Diagnostics and Intervention (both UiO and OUS), and from roles as chair of the Centre for Molecular Medicine Norway (NCMM) and vice dean for research at the Faculty of Medicine. I have been Head of teaching in clinical biochemistry (UiO) and Head of department of the Department of Medical Biochemistry (OUS and UiO). The leadership roles have given me in-depth knowledge of basic, translational, and applied research and innovation at the faculty and its partners.

As a teacher, I have experience from lectures, clinics, seminars, and laboratory courses at the professional study in medicine. I also participated in a trial as leader of a mentor group for students in module 3. I have written chapters in textbooks and I am co-editor of "Klinisk biokjemi og fysiologi".

I have received management training and professional training through UiO's Research Management Programme, OUS' management training programme, the National Top Management Program for the Specialist Health Service and the UHR Dean's School.

My research focuses on endocrinology and diabetes. As a medical biochemist I have also been contacted to contribute to several different exciting biomarker projects. These include a variety of topics such as pre-eclampsia, delirium in patients with femoral neck fracture, inflammation due to trauma, kidney function during cardiac arrest, meningococcal disease, microvesicles and coagulation activation, anemia in pregnant women, risk of celiac disease, iodine status in children in Uganda, and nutrition of premature babies.

The project collaborations are inspiring and have given a small insight into the breadth of the exciting research that takes place at The Faculty of Medicine. It has also shown me how important it is to have broad representation and participation from different professional backgrounds in the planning and implementation of all types of projects - an experience which I will be very useful for me as a dean.
