Academic interests
Alex is a PhD candidate in Medical Anthropology and Global Health at the Department of Community Medicine and Global Health, Institute of Health and Society at the University of Oslo. His interests are in Medical Anthropology and Global Health, focusing on anthropology of Global Health and Global Health Security particularly in the Global South.
Currently focusing on Antibiotics and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), Alex is interested in critical medical anthropology: how collective structures influence health and well being. His PhD Project is titled "Antibiotic use: Socioeconomic, ecological and material conditions for antimicrobial use in animal health in Tanzania". The project aims to provide rich ethnographic insights on the macro environment for antimicrobial use, going beyond just behavior.
Previously, Alex has been involved in research projects in East Africa on Health Determinants and Health Seeking, Tuberculosis and HIV, Gender and Development Studies, Higher Education Research, and Gender and Sexuality.
PhD Project
Under the supervision of Prof. Heidi Fjeld, Prof. Ruth Prince, and Prof. Anne Kveim of the Institute of Health and Society, Alex aims to produce an ethnographic account of antibiotic use in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania among livestock farmers. His PhD is part of the From Asia to Africa: Antibiotic trajectories across the Indian Ocean project.
Background
Alex is an Anthropologist by training with a focus on social and health research particularly in socioeconomic, cultural and economic determinants of health. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology and an MA in Medical Anthropology, both from the University of Nairobi. His Master’s Thesis is titled "Lived Experience of Tuberculosis Patients- Insights from Nairobi City County". Prior to his PhD, he worked at the African Population and Health Research Center in Nairobi, Kenya as a Research Officer. Alex has also worked with other international research institutions in research and evaluation capacity. Alex is an outgoing, ready-to-learn and unlearn individual, open to new academic and research experience, and an ardent believer of power of social networks.
