Mental health illnesses, including neurological and drug related disorders are known causes of disability, which make a substantial contribution to the global burden of diseases, not only in high-income countries, but also in low- and middle-income countries.

The treatment gap of mental disorders is much broader in the low- and middle-income countries compared to the high-income countries, which contributes to health inequity and inequality worldwide. Thus, in the spirit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), there is a dire need for more partnerships and stronger institutional collaborations in the fields of patient care, teaching and research between academic institutions in the South and North. This is especially true among institutions in the South, in order to fully understand and address global mental health issues effectively.
