Strengthening emergency and essential surgery and anesthesia is a crucial component towards universal health coverage, as approximately 5 billion people are estimated to lack access to safe and affordable surgical and anesthesia care. This lack mainly affects the population in low and middle income countries. Providing surgery for common and easily treatable conditions such as obstructed labour, appendicitis or fractured bones not only saves lives and prevents disability, it also promotes economic growth.
