Grab a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy the very first Afternoon Tea Conversation featuring Eva Gerdts, Professor of Cardiology at the University of Bergen and WGH Norway Advisory Group member. Eva shares her career journey as a woman working in a male-dominated field and reflects on some of the obstacles she experienced along the way. Discover how she juggled a family while trying to kick start her career as one of the only women in this specialized field. Eva will offer some words of advice to the next generation while touching on some of the inequities of gender present today in academia.

About Eva Gerdts

Eva Gerdts, M.D., Ph.D. is a Norwegian specialist in internal medicine and cardiology. She defended her PhD on effects of high blood pressure (hypertension) on the heart at the University of Bergen (UiB) in 1999. Her postdoctoral fellowship included 2 years with Professor Devereux at Weill Cornell Medical Centre, New York, USA. She is currently employed as full professor of cardiology at the UiB and senior consultant in cardiology at Haukeland University Hospital, both in Bergen, Norway. Her research focuses on how hypertension damages the heart, in particular sex differences in hypertension-mediated heart disease. Her research is based upon clinical studies in community-based cohorts and in groups of patients with hypertension or hypertension-associated disorders using non-invasive cardiovascular imaging. Her international network has involved research in Africa, North and South America and Europe. Her current most important collaborators include Giovanni de Simone, Federico II University, Naples (hypertension), Italy and Vera Regitz-Zagrosek, Charitè University, Berlin, Germany (sex differences). She has published more than 200 research papers, one book and several book chapters. She is a fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and of the American Heart Association and member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
