Since its initiation in 2011, the maternal / reproductive health group within LEVE has focused on some main areas within global public health and policy discourse. They include:
- Access to care (and remedies to overcome barriers)
- Coverage (and policy investments to strengthen care - especially in hard to reach populations and the poor)
- Utilization and outcomes (especially maternal mortality and near miss outcomes)
- Abortion and post-abortion care
Core studies have addressed these issues on national levels as well.
The focus may soon shift, in accordance with the new sustainable development goals. For us, this means linking maternal and reproductive health to broader societal issues, like war and conflict, gender discrimination, poverty and health system strengthening. It will also require adapting tools/interventions that enable us to look at the finer issues of care; like interpersonal, professional and technical skills.
This seminar will highlight these issues and attempt to place them within a global policy framework and in relation to the current shift from the millennium development goals (MDGs 4 & 5) to the new sustainable development goals (SDGs), as well as discuss this shift with regards to future challenges and its implications for maternal health.
