WGH Norway acknowledges the urgency of acting towards gender equity in global health leadership positions. Women make up approximately 75% of the health workforce and yet their representation at higher levels of global health leadership is limited, especially in the private sector. The WGH Norway Youth Coordinators have established an Inspiration Series with a lineup of multiple influential speakers for 2022. With this Inspiration Series, students and young professionals are invited to conversations with female role models from the private and public sphere.
Our first speaker, Kari E. Krogstad will focus on her experience with global health leadership in the private sector. While reflecting on her personal journey, she will also discuss women leadership in regard to the benefits and barriers that still exist today. Finally, Kari will share advice for students and young professionals and here we encourage the audience to interact by posing questions.
Kari E. Krogstad has 30 years of experience from leadership roles in the international healthcare industry. She has had the opportunity to work with the most talented and inspiring people, teaming up to bring innovative technologies and gold standard products developed in Norway, to the global market. With a background in Molecular Biology and Marketing & Economy, her career started with the contrast media from Nycomed Imaging, moving on to the unique magnetic beads at Dynal. Currently, Kari is heading up Medistim and the market leading ultrasound devices for intraoperative use. Additional experiences come from board positions in both start-up and mature companies. She cares for biology and technology, but most of all she is passionate about people.
The Inspiration Series: Each event part of the series will highlight successful individuals working in different areas of the global health sector and will offer students and young professionals guidance and inspiration. The aim is to have a virtual discussion where participants will be able to become acquainted with different career pathways in global health by listening and actively interacting with speakers. Bente Mikkelsen on May 4 at 19.00 CET
Bente Mikkelsen is the Director of Non-Communicable Diseases in the division of UHC/Communicable and Noncommunicable diseases at the WHO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. She was formerly the Director of the Division of Noncommunicable Diseases and Promoting Health through the Life-course at the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe (Copenhagen, Denmark), Head of Secretariat for the Global Coordination Mechanism on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases (WHO GCM/NCD) at the World Health Organization Headquarters (Geneva, Switzerland) from its inception in 2014 as well as a former CEO of the Southern and Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority. Mikkelsen is trained as a gynecologist and obstetrician and holds a master’s degree in Health Administration and Management from the University of Oslo. Her current focus is on achieving the SDGs through the reduction of premature deaths from NCDs in the context of WHO General Programme of Work, and working across sectors with multi-stakeholders, within and beyond the health sector using innovation, implementation research, health literacy and new technologies.
Andrea S. Winkler on October 12 at 19:00 CET
Andrea S. Winkler is the co-founder and currently a special counselor for Women in Global Health Norway. She is a specialist neurologist, a senior researcher and the co-director of the Center for Global Health at the Technical University of Munich. She is also a deputy director at the Centre for Global Health at the University of Oslo, where she holds a full professorship in Global Health. Prof. Winkler has 18 years of experience with both clinical work and research in countries of sub-Saharan Africa. Her special interest lies with poverty-related neglected diseases of the infectious as well as non-infectious nature, global neurology/mental health and global digital health. She has had and continues to hold leading roles in various large-scale multidisciplinary health consortia in sub-Saharan Africa funded by the German Research Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Norwegian Research Council and the Germany Ministry of Education and Research, among others. Prof. Winkler also co-chairs The Lancet One Health Commission (together with Dr. John Amuasi, KCCR, Ghana) with offices in Germany, Ghana and Norway.
