A “haven of gender equality” or clever marketing? A history perspective on women’s rights in Norway

As women’s rights are being challenged in many parts of the world, Norway and the Nordic countries seem to have achieved the goal of gender equality. However, is this image a true reflection of Nordic societies or is it also a clever branding exercise? How secure are women’s rights in Norway? Is Norway using its image of “gender superpower” to promote gender equality globally?

Women in Global Health Norway, the Centre for Global Health at UiO and NTNU GenderHub are inviting you to this lunch talk on Wednesday 10th January at 11 am CET. The speaker is Eirinn Larsen, Historian of Modern Scandinavia and Europe and Professor at the University of Oslo. Going through the history of women’s rights in Norway, Eirinn will discuss the role of women´s rights in the country’s nation building, the role of gender equality in Norway today and how the image of ´gender-equality superpower´ is deployed and used globally.

Eirinn Larsen is Professor of History at the University of Oslo and leads the Research Group Democracy, Boundaries and Freedom. She has published extensively on women, gender equality and state feminism in Norway, Scandinavia and the Nordic region. She led the interdisciplinary Research Program Nordic Branding: The Politics of Exceptionalism financed by UiO:Nordic. She is currently leading the interdisciplinary Research Project Experiencing American Democracy financed by UiO:Democracy.
