Unnecessareans

Research project on use and misuse of cesarean section in low-resource setting receives 992.000 NOK in funding from Vestre Viken.

Vegard Weyergang Vartdal, PhD fellow with Prof. Johanne Sundby and participant in our new signatory theme on Global Surgery and Anaesthesia, has received funding for his research on cesarean section from the research committee at Vestre Viken.

His project will look at use and misuse of cesarean section in low-resource setting in Ethiopia and Tanzania, where the datacollection is already taking place.

“This is an important project, with a well-described scientific relevance and an elaborate progress plan”   - Comment from the Committee

The research project is a quantitative study, combined with a qualitative dimension, to investigate explanations for the existing traditions for treatment and decision-making regarding cesarean section in the two countries. Simultaneously the project will collect data for a follow-up study, to study the long-term effects of cesarean section.

Congratulations to Vegard Weyergang Vartdal and his colleagues!
