What are you doing in Ethiopia?
I am in Ethiopia to do fieldwork for my masters thesis. I am studying at the Centre for Development and the Environment at UiO doing a masters in development, environment and cultural change. In Ethiopia I’m conducting my research in a rural hospital and looking at how electricity is managed and how restricted access to electricity and electric equipment impacts workers there. My research methods include participant observation and semi-structured interviews.
Why Ethiopia?
I have some experience working in Ethiopia in the past. From that time I know that Ethiopia is a beautiful country, the people are incredibly friendly and the food is amazing. So, of course, Ethiopia was a natural location to chose for my field research. It’s been great being back!
How was it to plan your trip?
Arranging my trip was fairly easy. I did not go to Jimma as most students in the project do, but I am still in the same region of Ethiopia as Jimma is in. I chose this location because of my past experience working here. Jimma University was however still involved. They are helpful in applying for research clearance, something that can take quite a long time, so I advise others to start this process early.
What do you hope to get out of your journey and stay in Ethiopia?
I hope to complete my field research while I’m here, something I am on track to do. This will put me in a good position to submit my thesis in May.
