Making the World Safe from the Threats of Emerging Infectious Diseases

Dr. Osama Ahmed Hassan from the Centre for Global Health at University of Oslo joined the global discussion on emerging infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance at the Prince Mahidol Award Conference in Bangkok.

Dr. Osama Ahmed Hassan, postdoctoral research fellow and in charge of the “One Health” signatory theme at the Centre for Global Health, was invited as a speaker for the panel entitled “Strategic Information and the Evolution of Emerging Infectious Diseases: Lessons from the Past and New Opportunities”.

We know that emerging infectious diseases and their antimicrobial resistance related problem are quite complex and shared drivers are the interconnectedness of human, animal and environment. Hence, the entire conference has been shaped by the “One Health” approach.

The high profile international conference of The Prince Mahidol Award Conference (PMAC 2018) was held in Bangkok, Thailand from 29 January– 3 February 2018. The conference theme was entitled “Making the World Safe from the Threats of Emerging Infectious Diseases”.

The conference is one of the biggest international forums, focusing on policy-related health issues. This year the main focus was on emerging infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.

It was a great opportunity for University of Oslo to be among the leading institutes in the world discussing such global topics with international partners and we hope to continue such discussions in the future.
