Advanced Geriatric Nurses: Professional Role, Function, and Impact (completed)

The project aims to examine the professional role and function of Advanced Geriatric Nurses (AGN) and the differences they make in the municipal healthcare service. The differences to be investigated are related to patients, service models, and the services provided to patients.

About the Project:

An increasing proportion of elderly people in the population, earlier discharge from hospitals, and a growing number of elderly individuals living at home with complex and extensive needs, are placing greater demands on interdisciplinary collaboration and advanced expertise in the municipal healthcare service. To meet the need for increased nursing competence, a master's program has been established at the University of Oslo that educates AGNs. However, a challenge remains as the professional role and function of AGNs are not yet established in the municipal healthcare service. In collaboration with five selected municipalities, new municipal service models for older users have been developed, where AGNs work in teams with other healthcare professionals to provide healthcare assistance.

Objective:

The purpose of the project is to contribute to improved and more comprehensive municipal services and reduce the need for costly specialized services

Background:

All graduated AGNs will be interviewed in-depth to gather information about their experiences with their professional role and function. The integration of AGNs will be examined by sending out questionnaires to AGNs and stakeholders associated with AGNs. The service models in the collaborating municipalities will be further investigated using a multiple case study. The effect of the new role of AGNs on patients and organizational outcomes will be evaluated by collecting quantitative and qualitative data from each municipality and approximately 180 patients.

Funding:

The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway under the PRACTICEVEL program (New steps in the municipal health and care staircase: Educating for new roles and innovative models for treatment and care of frail elders).
