Covid-19 and the Kenyan health system

With funding from the Research Council of Norway (RCN) this project addresses an urgent issue in global health: the response of African health systems to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The project receives 12 million in new funding from RCN and is led by Associate Professor Ruth Prince at the Department of Community Medicine and Global Health (UiO), in collaboration with Professor Paul Wenzel Geissler at the Department of Social Anthropology (UiO).

The project uses a social anthropological approach to shed light on how African health systems have responded to the covid-19 pandemic.

–  Robust and sustainable health systems are the key to preventing the uncontrolled spread of new infectious diseases. We know little about the effect of covid-19 on health systems in Africa, says Prince and explains:

–  The project is based in Kenya, as an ethnographic case study, to investigate the effects of the pandemic on African health systems, including the UHC (Universal Health Coverage) agenda. We will focus in particular on the key fields of maternal health and primary health care, chronic disease treatment, disease monitoring and data management
