Objectives
The overall objective of the project is a historical study of the transition from international to global health. While the project frames histories since World War Two its specific focus is on historical developments of the very recent past.
Background
Analytically, this project focuses on four core issues:
- the reconfiguration of health economic governance around the markets
- the emergence of post-national institutions of health governance
- the limits of the therapeutic revolution and access policies
- the epidemiological transition and the management of risks.
This analytical framework is pursued in four thematic strands on tuberculosis, mental health, traditional medicine and medical genetics.
All of them combine problems of prevention and clinical care while having a post-war history long enough to reveal significant transformations related to the four core issues the Project.
There is going to be two regional focuses. One on East Africa the other on India.
In terms of methodology, the project is historical but will - in line with current practice in the field - borrow on all the work that is done by (medical) anthropologists of the subjects under study.
