About the project
Norwegian community health care is characterised by growing complexity and increased need for acute care. The proposed health care reforms will demand more and other competencies from an already pressed nursing staff in the community sector; of which increased competence in treatment, rehabilitation, health promotion and disease prevention are the most important. In this light an important question is how to allocate competence so that high-quality care can be realised.
We know little about the competence of nursing staff in community health care today. An investigation and exploration of the competence of the community nursing staff is therefore an imperative in order to meet the coming challenges in community care.
Objectives
The aim of this PhD study is threefold:
- To investigate the present status of competence and future required competence for community nursing staff through a literature review.
- Explore qualitatively the present status of competence and future required competence for community nursing staff.
- Develop and test a quantitative nursing staff competence assessment instrument that explores competence within and across professions.
Background
This project is a collaboration between the research group KIS and GEOF at the Department of nursing science, and is a subproject of a project called “Competence and Quality in community health care”.
