OneAquaHealth: People and environment in interaction for thriving and well-being

OneAquaHealth is a research and development project with a focus on public health and sustainability, and in particular the importance of access to and use of areas around rivers and streams (freshwater ecosystems) for activity, health and well-being.

About the project

"OneAquaHealth; Protecting urban aquatic eco systems to promote one health" is a research and development project with a focus on freshwater ecosystems' contribution to public health, interaction with the social and physical environment, and for security in densely built-up areas. The project will focus on public health, thriving, well-being and sustainability.

Plans are being made for broad citizen involvement or citizen science, to look at factors and conditions that contribute to good health with the collection, use and sharing of own observations about outdoor areas and health conditions. The aim is to map life in and around streams and rivers, introduce a digital solution for voluntary reporting of observations, and investigate whether the observations can be used as indicators for early warning of changes in and around rivers that may have an impact on public health, the environment and the individual thriving and well-being.

Our contribution to the project is to investigate opportunities and challenges in the planned citizen science and investigate the possibilities that such observations can contribute to improve public health, activity, the environment and well-being. The collected observations are used to create simple graphical representations and overviews of the status or changes in the environment, for example water flow in the rivers and streams, pollution, or new animal and plant species by and in the water, or temperature and air quality. This can point in the direction of necessary public health interventions or measures for well-being and activity.
