There is a lack of knowledge about good treatment trajectories and treatment methods for patients with long-term, generalized, widespread musculoskeletal pain. These patients are frequent users of primary health care services.
Health care professionals acknowledge that this group needs a broader treatment approach. Nevertheless, the patients often become regulars in the treatment system, and healthcare professionals may find it difficult to help. Research also shows that healthcare professionals can experience great uncertainty about how to understand and approach these patients' functional challenges and ailments.
Objectives
Develop, implement and evaluate the significance and feasibility of a new physiotherapy intervention in collaboration with physiotherapists in the primary health care service.
Methodology
The project follows a participatory research design, which involves close collaboration between researchers, physiotherapists, GPs and patients throughout the process.
The project is divided into three phases:
- Explore physiotherapists and GP’s experiences and what knowledge constitute the basis for existing practice (interview study).
- Develop, try out and adapt physiotherapy intervention by building a bridge between theoretical knowledge and clinicians' practice experiences.
- Evaluate the relevance and feasibility of the intervention by observing what happens in practice, interviewing patients and physiotherapists about their experiences with the physiotherapy intervention.
