About the project
PhD-project consists of three studies exploring quality in postoperative handovers:
- Quality in postoperative patient handovers: Comparison of perceived quality in handovers between nurse anesthetists and postoperative care nurses, - cross sectional study using questionnaires.
- Exploring clinician’s perspectives on risk and quality in postoperative handovers, – a focus group study of nurses and doctors working in perioperative care.
- Assessment of information transfer, practical tasks and patient condition in postoperative handovers, – an observational study of postoperative patient handovers.
Objectives
- Assess nurse’s evaluations of quality in postoperative patient handovers.
- Explore how different professional groups (nurses and doctors) evaluate risk and quality related to postoperative patient handover.
- Explore if factors related to patient condition and handover circumstances affect patient handover quality.
Background
A safe and efficient postoperative patient handover is important to ensure high quality care and to reduce the risk of patient harm. Previous research has shown that postoperative handovers are unstructured with frequent information omissions. There is a gap in the literature concerning if and how postoperative handovers are affected by factors related to patient condition and circumstances (clinician experience, workload, organization).
This project is exploring postoperative patient handover from a clinical perspective and from a patient perspective to increase knowledge about which factors affect postoperative handover quality.
