People with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis are a large and growing patient group. Current political documents state that OA patients mainly should receive treatment in primary care. However, recent Norwegian research indicates that the quality of care for this patient group is only sub-optimal.

Prosjektets bakgrunn

As a response to these challenges, a new model of OA care “The SAMBA model” was developed. SAMBA includes tailor-made, interactive workshops to educate physiotherapists and GPs in evidence-based OA care. The education program provides training in all elements of international recommendations for OA care, like patient education, individually tailored exercise and life-style altering advices.

  • A randomised controlled trial with a stepped wedge design
  • The target of this study is physiotherapists and patients with hip and/or knee OA
  • The study investigates the implementation of the SAMBA model of integrated OA care.The study takes place in six municipalities in Øvre Romerike

Prosjektets mål

  • To perform a systematic literature review investigating the importance of dose in exercise for patients with hip OA
  • To compare relevant health outcomes for patients with hip and/or knee OA treated in physiotherapy practice before and after implementation of a standardised, evidence-based intervention
  • To investigate the effects of an educational programme for physiotherapists, on uptake of OA core treatment recommendations and fidelity of the SAMBA programme
