About the election of new Head of Institute at IMB

The deadline for proposing candidates is on Monday 28 August 2024.

The eElection opens Monday 16th September and ends Friday 20th September 2024.

Tasks for Head of Institute 

The Head of Institute is responsible for the institute's overall operation and reports to the Dean.

How to propose candidates

All those with voting rights at at the Institute have a right to propose candidates for the election.

The proposal must be supported by at least five people with voting rights in the election. No one can sign more than one proposal. A declaration by the candidate that he or she is willing to stand for election should be attached to the proposal. If the declaration is not attached the Election Board will inform the candidate about the proposal.

The electoral board approves candidates and announces them on this website after the proposal deadline has elapsed on 28th August. 

In accordance with UiO election regulations § 26 part 2. if by the deadline only one candidate has been proposed no election will be held. In that case the Intitute Council appoints the new Head of Institute.

Who can vote

Employees holding at least 50% posts at the department as well as adjunct professors (professor II) are eligible to vote. As are students with semester registration at IMB for the autumn semester.

The determining factor governing voting eligibility is the voter's employment status on the day the vote is cast. 

Those on leave while in a paid position outside the university are not eligible to vote.

The electoral board settle cases of doubt with regard to voting rights.

Election settlement

The candidate that receives the most votes, and thus has the greatest combined voting weight, is elected. 

The Head of Institute is elected by the employees and semester registered students at the Institute. The votes are counted separately in the following two groups, and weighted as follows:

  • Employee 75%
  • Students 25%

E-election

Direct elections are conducted using electronic voting for all electoral groups.

The election of the head of institute is conducted according to the electoral rules for the University of Oslo and the rules for employing heads of faculties and institutes
