Clinical Nutrition

The vision of the research group is to increase knowledge about the importance of adequate diet for human health, intended for the prevention of chronic diseases, and to develop new nutritional-based therapies for patients.

We study

  • How a plant-based dietary pattern mediates protective effects (Blomhoff).
  • The roles of food on growth and development, as well as prevention of life style diseases, such as diabetes and coronary heart disease (Duttaroy).
  • Dietary assessment and interventions in cancer patients and patients with gastrointestinal disorders (Henriksen and Ottestad).
  • Dietary prevention of cholesterol-induced inflammation in early atherosclerosis (Holven and Brekke).
  • How to optimize nutritional status among vulnerable population groups as well as patients with chronic diseases (Iversen).
  • Atherosclerosis prevention and the interplay between nutrition and atherosclerosis (Retterstøl).
  • The biological mechanisms of fatty acids on human health, by using large scale datasets from controlled dietary intervention studies (Ulven).

We provide

  • The University of Oslo's core facility for clinical nutrition studies. This includes advanced equipment designed to promote clinical research, and harbors examination rooms, anthropometry, bioimpedance scales, a low-dose X-ray machine (Lunar iDXA), an ultrasound machine for measurement of carotid intima media thickness and liver fat, three research rooms for whole-room indirect calorimetry, and equpment for indirect calorimetry. The equipment is available to researchers within the department, the Institute, and for external users.
  • A metabolomics lab which offers analysis of metabolites by mass spectrometry based technology. The laboratory performs advanced analysis for most research groups at the department of nutrition, other departments at university of Oslo and Oslo university hospital. In addition, the laboratory conducts analysis for external clients on a commercial basis.
