Diet in cancer and gastrointestinal disorders

We are assessing nutritional status in pediatric and adult patients with cancer and gastrointestinal disorders, and are doing dietary interventions with the purpose of improving their health and quality of life.

Our research aims to assess the nutritional status of children and adults who are affected by cancer or live with chronic gastrointestinal conditions such as celiac disease or intestinal failure.

We use various methods such as: dietary surveys, anthropometric measurements, measurement of body composition and resting metabolic rate. We perform analyzes of blood, urine and faeces, and collect patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) such as gastrointestinal symptoms and quality of life.

We carry out a number of clinical studies in which we evaluate the effect of individual diet and nutritional treatment on clinical endpoints such as malnutrition, gastrointestinal symptoms and quality of life. The interventions include dietary advice, oral nutrition supplements, enteral- and parenteral nutrition.

The main priority now is to understand and prevent malnutrition, especially in cancer patients. We are planning a new big project and are looking for clinical partners with a special interest in cancer cachexia for the purpose of collaboration with an ERC application.
