Severe acute malnutrition in Kenyan children (completed)

Severe acute malnutrition remains a serious condition among small children in Southern Africa. This condition increases the risk of mortality, also in the hospital setting.

In this epidemiological study we will examine the outcomes of poor Kenyan children admitted to hospitals and who later are diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition. We will also use data from a completed randomized trial testing the effect of antibiotics on survival among HIV negative children.

Objectives

The main objectives are to determine:

  • Mortality
  • Incidence of severe infections
  • Recovery from severe acute malnutrition
