Institute for Surgical Research

The Institute for Surgical Research is a modern research institute, conducting molecular medicine research. The institute is both a university institute affiliated to the University in Oslo and a department at Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet. The collaboration with the hospital is emphasized by the clinical engagements of the group leaders, which come in addition to their university affiliation.

The institute has 8 research groups:

  • Molecular Cardiology
  • Integrated Cardiovascular Function
  • Vilhelm Magnus Laboratory for Neurosurgical Research
  • Experimental Orthopaedic Research
  • Cell Transplantation and Tissue Engineering
  • Experimental Microsurgery and Transplantation Group
  • Transplantation and Malignancy
  • Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

The institute is also responsible for extensive courses and training within keyhole surgery and micro surgery, as well as invasive procedures for pediatricians. The clinicians also employed by the university take part in the education of medical students.

Since its start in 1966, more than 140 doctoral theses have originated from the institute. The research has contributed to new treatment routines and diagnostic tools.

Professor Håvard Attramadal is head of institute.
