Espen A. Haavardsholm is professor in rheumatology at the University of Oslo and Head of Research and innovation at Diakonhjemmet Hospital, Oslo, Norway. In his early career Haavardsholm focused on the development and validation of imaging techniques. In 2008 he received the the King’s Gold Medal for his Ph.D. work on MRI in RA, as well as a EULAR Young Investigator Award in 2009. During the last decade Haavardsholm has focused on treatment of rheumatic diseases, and initiated several large multicentre studies investigating novel treatment strategies. He is currently the national coordinating PI of several large multicentre trials, and involved in numerous clinical and epidemiological studies, as well as projects within health economics, translational medicine and genetics.
