Professional Interests

  • Advanced MRI imaging markers in MS
  • Biomarkers and MS
  • Personalized treatment for MS patients
  • Life course studies (the BRAINMINT project)

Background

Einar August Høgestøl graduated as a medical doctor from the University of Oslo in 2012. He then spent one and a half years at the Neurosurgical Department at Oslo University Hospital HF before starting his doctoral project in the MS research group. He defended his doctoral project titled "MRI and other biomarkers in early multiple sclerosis" on October 27, 2020. He also works as a resident doctor at the Neurology Department at Oslo University Hospital and follows a large group of MS patients.

Since 2022, he has been leading the "Imaging Studies of MS" research group in collaboration with Professor and Dean Hanne F. Harbo. Here, they focus on advanced MRI analyses in MS, but also explore boundaries with other disease groups such as individuals who have had a stroke, ALS, and NeuroCovid.

Collaboration

He is a researcher at the Institute of Clinical Medicine at the University of Oslo, affiliated with the Neuro Clinic. Additionally, he is an associate professor at the EU-funded BRAINMINT project at the Department of Psychology, University of Oslo, and NORMENT. He has many ongoing projects in collaboration with the Multimodal Imaging group led by Professor Lars T. Westlye.

In terms of international collaboration, he is involved in projects within the MAGNIMS consortium and represents Oslo University Hospital HF and the University of Oslo in these endeavors. He is also engaged in several international research projects related to MS and MS, such as Sys4MS, MultipleMS, and OVERLORD-MS. Particularly in recent years, he has established and developed specific collaborations with Karolinska Hospital in Sweden (Tobias Granberg, Fredrik Piehl) and Leiden University (Hanneke Hulst).
