About the K. G. Jebsen Center for Neurodevelopmental disorders

The Center was established by a generous donation from Stiftelsen Kristian Gerhard Jebsen.

K.G. Jebsen Center for Neurodevelopmental Disorders is investigating the mechanisms behind the disorders by combining discoveries from large datasets of normal and abnormal development with new knowledge about genetics and brain imaging.

The Centre is directed by Terje Nærland from the Division of Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the Institute of Clinical Medicine UiO and The National Advisory Unit on Rare Disorders at Oslo University Hospital, in close collaboration with Norwegian Center for Mental Disorders Research (NORMENT).

The Center comprises a team of interdisciplinary researchers from different hospital divisions, researchers in molecular biology, neuroscience and big data population scientists, that together aim to generate new knowledge that can be translated to improved clinical practice.

About Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDs)

NDs comprise severe childhood disorders, including autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and various genetic syndromes that is associated with intellectual disability. The NDs are highly heterogeneous in clinical presentation and biological underpinning.

Genetic factors are known to be involved in causing NDs, but the mechanisms from a particular gene variant to  a particular developmental trajectory is not known. The Center will investigate the interplay of common and rare gene variants on brain development and function.
