In a recently published article in The American Journal on Addictions, researchers at SERAF have investigated the transition from amphetamine-induced psychosis to schizophrenia in a small prospective sample.
A sample of 28 individuals was identified while hospitalized for amphetamine-induced psychosis. During follow-up six years later, 25 percent of the sample population was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
The study shows that hospitalization for amphetamine-induced psychosis was a relatively specific risk factor for schizophrenia, and the mortality rate in amphetamine-induced psychosis was high.
