Naloxone distribution and possession

In a new article published in Addiction, researchers from SERAF and FHI examined possession and use of naloxone following the implementation of a large-scale naloxone distribution program.

A survey of nearly 500 illicit substance users from 7 Norwegian cities looked into if participants had attended a naloxone training, currently possessed, or had ever used naloxone. The study also looked into distribution data from the start of the naloxone program in Norway in 2014.

About half of the survey participants possessed naloxone, and possession rates corresponded well to the duration of distribution programs in the cities. Overall, 15% of the study participants reported ever using naloxone. Those that reported drug-dealing or heroin injecting were over two times more likely to have used naloxone.

The distribution rate of naloxone from the program indicated good saturation to at-risk individuals, with a significant proportion of participants who had possessed or used naloxone.
