Compared to ordinary OMT, HAT patients are characterized by more challenges in social situations, more drug use and experience with non-fatal overdoses. In addition, more have the treatment goal of harm reduction, rather a rehabilitation with freedom from drugs, which is more common in ordinary OMT.

Treatment satisfaction is somewhat higher in HAT than among OMT patients, but the differences in satisfaction are small, compared with findings from the 2022 status report (in Norwegian).

Both qualitative and quantitative research findings are included in the evaluation of heroin-assisted treatment.

The principal investigator for the HAT evaluation, Professor Thomas Clausen (SERAF, UiO), says that it will be interesting to follow the other findings from the evaluation project, which is a collaboration between SERAF, RusForsk, BAR, CRF and proLARNett.
