What should I do in the event of an overdose?
If you are the first person on the scene of an overdose, you must call an ambulance (113) and start first aid if necessary.
- Call 113
- Provide first aid if needed
- Give rescue breaths and/or CPR if the person is not breathing
- You can administer naloxone nasal spray (overdose antidote) if you have it available
- If you must leave the person, place them in the recovery position
Who should have and can get Naloxone?
Those who use opioid substances themselves are at risk of an overdose, and are also those that could be the first to arrive at someone else's overdose. Therefore, there is good reason for people who are at risk of overdose to receive naloxone nasal spray as a measure to help others in an overdose situation.
- People who regularly use opioid substances (especially those who inject opioids) are at risk of overdose. These individuals are a priority group for the distribution of naloxone nasal spray.
- Individuals who primarily inject non-opioid substances, such as amphetamines, but also occasionally use opioids, are at risk of overdose. These are also a priority group for the distribution of naloxone nasal spray.
- People who are relatives of persons at risk of overdose are eligible to receive naloxone nasal spray.
- Individuals who use high doses of opioid medications (strong painkillers), especially in combination with benzodiazepines or other habit-forming drugs, may be at risk of overdose. These may be considered for the distribution of naloxone nasal spray.
- People who use drugs more sporadically may be at risk of overdose. The degree of risk depends on the type of substance used and how much and often drugs are used. After an assessment, these may also receive naloxone nasal spray.
- Employees in the service system who may come into contact with individuals at risk of overdose can receive naloxone nasal spray. These staff should complete the online course in the use of naloxone. There are no direct contraindications for receiving naloxone nasal spray.
