Clinical Radiology

We perform translational research from basic radiology science to clinical research, pure clinical research and quality control studies in order to find new methods, improve methods, and control our work in order to keep high standards.

About the group

It is a group that includes all aspects of radiology. Our research profile is to a large extent given by the high number of we have at Akershus University Hospital, and accordingly we perform clinical research based large patient cohorts.

However, we have extensive collaboration with researchers from physics, molecular biology and mathematics, giving us opportunities for translational research from mathematics, physics, AI, genetics, radiogenomics and more, all focusing on endpoints towards better diagnostics.

Long term goals:

The groups long term goals are:

  • To create new and support ongoing research projects in all parts of radiology at a level that will create PhDs.
  • To create opportunities for post doc projects/researchers in several areas.
  • To give researchers possibilities for qualifying as professors, by giving opportunities for publishing new articles and being supervisors for PhDs.
  • To support at least one sub-group to be able to compete for a position as centre of clinical excellence.
  • To establish 3-4 research groups based on this group, possible subgroups or new independent groups:
    • Oncologic radiology,
    • Thoracic radiology,
    • Musceloskeletal radiology,
    • Neuro-, interventional-, and gynecological radiology.

Projects

The group has projects within all aspects of radiology. Here are our present main projects.

Oncologic radiology:

  • Breast cancer. One PhD done on material from the department and we have an ongoing research on MRI of breast cancer, and starting work on radiogenomics together with groups from OUS and UiO. We have collaboration with oncology and urology at Ahus, and molecular biology from OUS and UiO. We have had and have the possibility of future international collaboration.
  • Prostate cancer. An ongoing PhD-student and several projects planned or just started, concerning MRI and deep-learning.
  • Colorectal cancer. We have had a collaboration with oncologists.

Musceloskeletal radiology:

  • The meniscus. Deep-learning, neuronal networks and MRI of the meniscus. Ongoing work together with orthopaedic surgeons. Testing the use of 7T MRI to improve diagnostics. Collaboration locally and with Trondheim and Ålesund-
  • Lumbar pain, Ongoing PhD-thesis.
  •  Ancle and foot problems, ongoing PhD-thesis
  • PET-CT and amyloid. Planned project.

Technical aspects of MRI and CT:

  • CT imnprovements, especially concerning contrast media. An ogoing PhD-project.
  • Development of 3D techniques for the placenta, on MRI.

Screening for lung cancer:

A collaboration with the Norwegian Society against Cancer.

Cooperation

  • Collaboration with the research group Cancer genome variation and leader Vessela Kristensen concerning possible development of radiogenomics. Read more about the group from their home page here (external site).
  • Breast cancer group. Cross association and collaboration between leader of the group Jürgen Geisler, and group leader Geitung. We do also have international collaboration, including several nations/groups. Read more about the group here (in Norwegian).
  • Cardiovascular research group.  Collaboration on MRI of the heart, Siri Lagethon Heck in both groups.
  • Musceloskeletal radiology in collaboration with orthopaedic surgery at Ahus and with external groups. Collaboration with prof Asbjørn Årøen locally, and with groups in Trondheim (7T MRI group) and Ålesund.
  • Screening for lung cancer. Project by assoc prof Haseem Ashraf, and he has collaboration both locally and with groups from Denmark.
  • Prostate cancer group. Collaboration locally with urologists (Müller) and oncology (Oldenburg).
