Orthopaedic Traumatology

The group’s research profile covers a wide range of orthopaedic traumatology, based on registry studies, preclinical studies in animal and biomechanical models, as well as clinical studies.

About the group

We share infrastructure and research support with the other groups in the Orthopaedic department and are well equipped, for the time being with three professors and three research coordinators being connected to the traumatology group.

The osteoporosis-related part of the research, in particular, has been most successful, with several theses and numerous publications. Other clinical projects have focused on severe high energy injuries, such as femur, pelvis and acetabulum fractures. Several randomized studies have been carried out and more are ongoing.

Many of the group’s members participate in OUH’s national treatment service for particularly complex pelvis injuries and the national center of excellence for elbow injuries. Several research projects spring from these units.

Experimental research has focused on basic mechanisms for fracture and tendon healing, and the group has developed models for medical intervention and biomechanical testing.

The group also participates in several international multicenter studies, and leads national multicenter studies in various clinical areas.

Long-term goals

Our long-term goal is to defend and continue the position as Norway’s leading research group within the field of orthopaedic traumatology.

Internationally, the group is already among the leading within the field of osteoporosis-related fractures, and the ambition is to reach this level in other relevant areas as well, such as multi traumatology.

The combined commitment both to experimental models and to clinical studies of high quality is to be continued.
