Pulmonary Medicine

The objective of the Pulmonary Research Group is to stimulate, coordinate and conduct research related to pulmonary medicine.

The establishment of our research group represents an effort to focus the research on selected areas, prepare new proposals and integrate research in clinical practice.

Our group members have broad experience and extensive cooperation with researchers in cardiology, sleep medicine, occupational health, psychiatry, health services research, health economics, health outcomes and neurology.

Our research is done in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at Akershus University Hospital (Ahus) and University of Oslo (UiO).

Long term goal

Our long-term objective is to stimulate, coordinate and conduct clinical research related to pulmonary medicine.

The hospital has a large catchment area, representing about 10% of the Norwegian population. Hence, the department has access to large patient populations for research in prevalent diseases and will also represent an interesting partner in research on less common conditions.

The group aims to conduct research activities within three major fields of pulmonology, such as obstructive lung diseases, interstitial lung diseases and lung cancer, and will partner with collaborators for projects in other areas and multicenter studies.

Projects

The group has several projects in different fields of pulmonology.

Comorbidity in COPD

  • Airway obstruction in never smokers – a translational approach. Postdoc project.
  • Association between airway obstruction, smoking and comorbidity. Data from the Akershus cardiovascular examination (ACE) 1950. PhD project.
  • Hepcidin and iron metabolism in COPD and other chronic inflammatory disease. PhD project.
  • Long-term oxygen therapy and myocardial function in patients with COPD and respiratory failure. PhD project.
  • Lung ultrasound and pulmonary congestion. Collaborative project with Harvard University/Boston General Hospital. PhD project

Occupational exposure and lung obstruction

  • Occupational exposure among potroom workers in aluminium smelters and lung function. A longitudinal study. A large sample with longitudinal data from several Norwegian smelters.
  • The association between sputum findings and mortality in patients with COPD.

Health outcomes/epidemiology

  • Epidemiology of sarcoidosis in Norway. A register-based study, linking several central Norwegian health registers.
  • Norwegian valuation study for EQ-5D-5L, aiming to derive Norwegian preference weight for use in evaluation in health care. Cooperation with Norwegian Institute of Public Health.
  • Respiratory symptoms and mortality over 45 years. A cohort study. Pooled data from four Norwegian cohorts, with more than 100.000 respondents.
  • Sleep apnea in patients with Multiple sclerosis. Cooperation with Oslo University Hospital.
  • The impact of pulmonary rehabilitation in patients with persistent dyspnea following pulmonary embolism.
  • Predictors of complications in percutaneous CT-guided biopsies. Collaboration with Department of Radiology, Ahus

COVID-19

  • Patient-reported outcomes and lung function after hospitalization for COVID-19 infection (PROLIFE). A multicenter observational study in Norway.
