Registry-based drug and addiction research

The research group investigates risks and outcomes related to various topics in drug and addiction research, through the use of national registry data.

About the group

Multiple research projects at SERAF use register data as part of their data base.

These projects are characterized by linking individual cohort data (survey or registry based) together with data from one or more national registers.

As national registers contain information on the entire population, all clinical cohorts can potentially be linked with register data.

The research group has over time specialized in and developed strategies for using registry data in drug and addiction research which makes it possible to estimate prevalence (substance use disorder and mental health), describe patient histories (drop out and change of treatment), describe risk factors and to predict outcomes (morbidity after treatment).

As registry data are often rich in detail and not affected by loss to follow-up, they are less affected by selection bias and low statistical power that traditional methodological approaches may suffer from.

The application of registry data is often less time consuming while at the same time providing the opportunity to analyze differences across countries when similar registries are available

Cooperation

The research group is a multidisciplinary team including researchers and PhD students with complementary backgrounds including epidemiology, psychology, medicine, and statistics.

The group collaborates with national and international projects across multiple disciplines.
