SHeaR - Sleep, Heart and Respiration

Our research is focused on the development of personalized treatment for sleep disorders.

About the group

The SHeaR research group is based on a collaboration between University of Oslo (UiO), Akershus University Hospital (Ahus),  Oslo University Hospital (OUS) and Drammen Hospital.

We have contributed to the development of an electronic sleep diary. Currently we are testing scalable interventions for the treatment of sleep apnoea and chronic insomnia disorder.

We have ongoing studies related to Akershus Sleep Apnea cohort (ASAP) and patients referred with suspicion of OSA to Ahus and North Estonia Medical Center.

The project for development and testing of treatment for insomnia with CBT-I and effect on biomarkers in heart patients is conducted through a collaboration with the University of Oslo (UiO), Oslo University Hospital (OUH), Drammen Hospital and Akershus University Hospital (Ahus).

We collaborate with the following EU projects through international cooperation:

  • Sleep Revolution
  • Innovative Medicines Initiative, Beamer
  • Eurostars Hypnos
  • Interreg ØKS, innosleep
  • Nordforsk Nordic Personalized Medicine, Nordsleep study

Long term goals

The group's long-term goal is to develop and test the effect of personalized treatments for sleep disorders. Therefore, we aim to map out psychological and somatic factors that affect sleep such as:

  • anxiety
  • dysfunctional believes and attitudes
  • depression
  • pharyngeal closing pressure
  • arousal threshold
  • loop gain
  • restlessness or muscle function.

A holistic understanding of the interplay between these factors, allows us to develop new therapeutic methods.

Combining interdisciplinary skills, we produce world-class research that benefits the patients.

Thus, we will maximize our goal of helping patients with sleep disorders to access safe and effective sleep treatments. Subsequently, health-related quality of life and better short- and long-term health outcomes for the individual patient and population may be improved.
