UNFORTUNATELY, THIS LECTURE HAS TO BE CANCELLED DUE TO ILLNESS.

Dr. Simon A Johnston is a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Infection, Immunity and Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. His research addresses host-pathogen interaction and immune evasion by the Cryptococcus pathogen. Dissemination of this research can contribute to improved treatments for affected immunocompromised individuals, particularly prevalent in the developing world.

Cryptococcus is a human pathogen and causes hundreds of thousands of deaths in the severely immunocompromised world-wide each yearly. We want to understand the fundamental process of how immune system functions during the infection and how macrophage mediated immunity play a role during Cryptococcus infection and the mechanism of phagocytosis of these opportunistic fungi.  We use a multidisciplinary approach to understand the infection mechanism, the regulation of the uptake mechanism of fungi and host pathogen interactions.
