Summary

Khalaf Mreihil has studied the effect of phototherapy for neonatal jaundice on the formation of water-soluble substances (bilirubin photoisomers) that theoretically are believed to be brain protective. In addition, he has studied the use of phototherapy in daily practice in all neonatal intensive care units in Norway. He found that the formation of water-soluble substances starts as soon as phototherapy lights are turned on, and that, in spite of national guidelines, there is wide variation in the practical use of phototherapy for newborn infants in Norway
