Exploring the intervention package proACT, NEWS and MIG set up to strengthen patient safety

With patients admitted to hospitals requiring more care, hospitals need good patient safety practices to safeguard their well-being.

As the complexity of medical treatments increases, it is expected that there will be a further increase in acute admissions of critically ill patients in hospitals. Consequently, healthcare personnel must possess high levels of competence and skills, including knowledge of how to identify patient clinical conditions.

About the project

To assess patients’ clinical conditions better, an intervention package consisting of proACT courses, the scoring system of NEWS assessing six physiological parameters (respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, temperature, systolic blood pressure, pulse rate and level of consciousness), and Mobil Intensive group (MIG) has been implemented at Akershus University Hospital.

This package aims to improve patient safety by providing healthcare workers with tools necessary to more successfully  observe and assess patients' clinical conditions.

'The purpose of this PhD project is to gain knowledge about the conditions for good patient safety work when this package is used.

The research questions are developed in line with the James Lind Alliance's method for needs-identified research. This means that relevant research topics are anchored and developed in collaboration with hospital management, healthcare workers, and user representatives.

Objectives

The project consists of three sub-studies.

  • The first sub-study examines healthcare workers' experiences with the proACT, NEWS, and MIG intervention package, including the effects on physicians' and nurses' collaboration, learning, and transfer of competence.
  • The second sub-study focuses on the challenges involved in receiving assistance from the MIG response team when handling acute exacerbations, with particular attention on ethical dilemmas.
  • The third sub-study is a methodological paper on the needs led research process (NLR).

Outcomes

The findings of the PhD project provide insights into the conditions that underlie good patient safety work when using the proACT, NEWS, and MIG intervention package.

The results will have implications for healthcare workers' collaboration, learning, and transfer of competence, as well as for the implementation of the intervention package across different healthcare settings.
