Overdoses in the drug consumption room

This project examines overdoses at the drug consumption room in Oslo.

About the project

Drug consumption rooms (DCR) are legally sanctioned safe spaces where people can self-administer drugs hygienically and under supervision of skilled staff.

A DCR opened in 2005 as a part of Prindsen reception center in Oslo. At this site, clients receive advice on safer use, overdose prevention, and safe injection and inhalation techniques.

While DCRs have been found to reduce overdose fatalities, non-fatal overdoses remain a common occurrence.

The purpose of this study is to understand the frequency and severity of overdoses that have occurred at the DCR in Oslo.

Objectives

The study will explore the frequency of overdoses that occurred from different types of drugs, and from different routes of use.

The DCR records all instances of overdoses and an examination into these records can provide useful information on overdose severity, trends, substances involved, and outcomes for their users.

Further, an examination into the trends of use of different substances and modes of administration alongside the proportion of overdoses can give an indication into how different substances/routes impact overdose rates within the DCR.

Ultimately, this study can help to determine the extent to which overdoses have occurred at the DCR, and how these events have changed over time with the permission for additional routes and substances within the facility.
