Patient safety

Our researchers has conducted patient safety studies since 2006.

About the project

The studies are within three different themes:

  • Measurement and improvement of patient safety culture
  • Patient harm measurement
  • Studies on quality improvement

The last 5 years we have published 19 papers within these topics.

Measurement and improvement of patient safety culture

In 2006-07, we tested the Norwegian translation of the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ) Short Form 2006 at Ahus. This has formed the basis for several projects regarding the validation of the reliability and validity of the SAQ tool for use in primary healthcare and specialized healthcare, nationally and internationally. One project has also focused on validating SAQ for use in child welfare. Two dimensions of SAQ, Safety Climate and Teamwork Climate, are included in the national employee survey ForBedring, which is conducted annually in all healthcare trusts. The Norwegian Directorate of Health has since 2022 worked to develop a national quality indicator based on data from this national survey.

Patient injury investigations

In 2007, a method for measuring patient harm, the Global Trigger Tool (GTT), was introduced in five departments at Ahus. Correlation between measurements of patient safety culture and patient harm with GTT has been documented, and GTT investigations are now conducted in all Norwegian hospital trusts. We are involved in several research and innovation projects to study the variation in assessment of patient harm between GTT teams in different healthcare trusts.

Studies on quality improvement

The Norwegian Medical Association's Research Institute (LEFO) regularly conducts panel surveys on a representative panel of Norwegian doctors. In collaboration with LEFO, we have investigated the extent to which Norwegian doctors are interested in and have allocated working hours to work on quality improvement.
