Fume hoods and security benches

The guidelines apply to all research activities where protection is needed against hazardous chemicals or biological material in use. All people working  in the lab should ensure that the equipment work properly and is used according to intention for protection.

General Information

The A2 security benches in the cell-labs are protecting both person and the product. They contain hepa filters and are used for protection of infectious biological material, safety level II, and are not intended for chemical work. All work involving chemicals must happen in small volumes and in a controlled manner following a risk assessment.  All security benches are recirculating 70% of the air and are not connected to the ventilation system.

The fume hoods in the labs are only protecting the person and not the product. They are fully connected to the ventilation system, and the intended use is protection against hazardous chemicals.

Responsibility

NCMM is responsible for routine measurements and control of airflow in the units, maintenance and repair of defects. The device should always be equipped with sufficient number of fume hoods and security benches that works properly.

Each user is responsible for acquiring knowledge of how to use the fume hoods and the security benches correctly.

Protection depends on correct use of the equipment

  • Always check that the equipment is operating in normal mode before use.
  • Be aware of alarms and error messages for reduced flow. Do not use the equipment if any error Messages are shown, and always give information of errors to your superior.
  • Do not start any work with an overloaded workspace. Equipment in the hood/ bench may create turbulence that can affect your protection.
  • Adjust the hatch in the correct setting to secure the right protection. The security benches give an alarm if the height is not correct, but the fume hoods have a larger range before an alarm is given.
  • Work as close to the back wall as possible in the middle of the bench or hood.
  • Always close the hatch after use to reduce energy consumption. Be aware that the correct height for a closed fume hood is the minimum sign on the side of the hood.
