For three full days, two students from Ullern High School visited the Sekulic group. Here, they got hands-on experience with methods for studying proteins in the lab, as well as insight into the day-to-day life of a researcher.
Students get a taste for working in life science research
The placement was part of a study program at Ullern High School called “Forskerlinja”. This program focuses on giving high school students unique insight into what it is like to work in life science research, for instance by visiting different labs. During their time at the Sekulic lab, the students got a taste for working in a research environment and some of the possibilities that lie within a career in life science research.
For Kelly Yong Kreutzmann Teigen, one of the visiting students, it was a particular highlight to experience the research environment of the Sekulic-group and NCMM.
– It was interesting to see how several different research groups work together in the same place, and how the environment is. I was surprised to see how much contact there was between the groups, says Kelly.
A valuable experience to have early in a career
Stine Malene Hansen Wøien, head engineer in the Sekulic group, supervised the students during their visit. For her, it was fun and inspiring to be part of a program for young aspiring researchers. Both Stine and Nikolina agree that it is important to introduce children and youth to the possibilities of working in research early on.
– It is so valuable for young and motivated students to have this experience early in their careers. I remember when I was in their shoes... It was like walking into a giant candy factory. I hope that this experience will stimulate their minds and motivate them to continue their scientific studies, and I am glad if this visit was the first stone on their path, says Nikolina Sekulic about the visit.
