NCMM acts as a greenhouse for young, talented researchers. The Centre prides itself on providing an environment that allows all of our staff to develop and grow so that, when they are ready for their next challenge, they are equipped with the experience and skills needed to succeed. PhD Students
Since NCMM’s first year of operations in 2010, the Centre has seen over 30 PhD students successfully defend their theses. NCMM’s former PhD students have gone on to work in a wide variety of different roles in both industry and academia at some of Norway’s leading organisations and institutions.
Postdoctoral Researchers
Since 2009 NCMM has welcomed over 50 postdoctoral researchers. NCMM’s former postdoctoral researchers have gone on to work in a wide variety of different roles in both industry and academia at leading organisations in Norway and internationally.
Group Leaders
In the period 2010-2020, altogether nine group leaders have successfully rotated out of the Centre and into permanent positions. This includes five group leaders from the former BiO (Biotechnology Centre of Oslo, which merged with NCMM in 2017). In addition, four NCMM group leaders and their groups have successfully rotated out of the Centre and into permanent roles as Professors and PIs. NCMM's past group leaders, along with the positions they held after leaving the Centre, are listed below.
Sandra Lopez-Aviles, group leader 2011-2021, rotated out to an Associate Professorship at the Deparment of Biosciences, University of Oslo. Read our interview with Sandra, published in September 2021
J. Preben Morth, group leader 2010-2019, rotated out to a Professorship at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Read our alumni interview with Preben, published in November 2020.
Kjetil Taskén, group leader and former Director NCMM, 2008-2019, left NCMM to become Head of the Institute for Cancer Research, Oslo University Hospital.
Ian Mills, group leader 2010-2016, rotated out to Queens University, Belfast, and John Black Associate Professorship, University of Oxford. Read our alumni interview with Ian, published in December 2020.
Antoni Hurtado, group leader 2011-2017, rotated out to a PI position at the University of Barcelona.
Erlend Nagelhus, group leader 2010-2014, rotated out to Professorship at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo (died 2020).
Michael Leitges group leader 2006-2016, rotated out to become a PI at Memorial University, Newfoundland, Canada
Bernd Thiede, group leader 2005-2015, rotated out to become PI/Head of Core Facility at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo.
Hilde L. Nilsen, group leader 2004-2013, rotated to Professorship at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo, and Akershus University Hospital (Ahus).
Farrukh. A. Chaudry, group leader 2005-2013, rotated out to Professorship at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo.
Ian Donaldson, group leader 2005-2013, rotated out to run a bioinformatics consultancy service (Donaldson Research). Currently head of the Translational Sciences Bioinformatics Group at AdaptImmune UK.
