Abstract
Gemma has recently joined the University of Oslo as (part-time) postdoctoral researcher on Virtual Presence. Gemma also works at the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences at the University of Oxford in the Interdisciplinary Research in Health Sciences Group, which is led by Professors Trish Greenhalgh and Sara Shaw. In this talk, Gemma will explain her perspective on Virtual Presence, which is shaped by her previous experience of working in the public sector in the UK, as well as her academic work.
Gemma will provide an overview of her current and recent research projects which include the Wellcome-Trust funded Studies in Co-creating Assistive Living Solutions, and the NIHR-funded Optimising Shared Decision Making for High Risk Major Surgery.
In recent weeks, Gemma has been researching the use of video consultations in the NHS during the pandemic and will share some early thoughts on some interesting (and perhaps unexpected) findings that could inform the work on Virtual Presence.
Gemma also plans to facilitate collaborative links between Oxford and Oslo and is keen to hear any suggestions about how colleagues would like to do this.
A brief biography
Gemma joined the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences at the University of Oxford as Health Services Researcher in 2019, after completing her DPhil which was entitled: Integrated care in practice: a case study of health and social care for adults considered to be at high risk of hospital admission Gemma is an interdisciplinary researcher, with experience of qualitative, ethnographic and sociologically informed case study research.
Gemma’s research has focused on critically analysing the relationships between health and social care policy, practice and lived experience. She has broad interests in how patients and the public interact with health and social care services and specific interests in how these interactions are shaped by the complexity of health and social care systems and technologies.
Gemma has an interest in interdisciplinary public engagement. She won the NIHR School of Primary Care Research’s prize for ‘Impactful Contribution in Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement’ and was Highly Commended for the Vice Chancellor of Oxford’s Award for Public Engagement in Research for a collaborative project with the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford.
Prior to embarking on a research career, Gemma worked in the public sector in the UK. She started her career working in the areas of homelessness and mental health in the voluntary sector before pursuing a career in the NHS where she held senior service improvement and commissioning roles.
