Health inequalities in the city of Bologna

In this talk, I will share the experience built through an action-research project designed to map and tackle health inequalities in the city of Bologna, conducted by the Centre for International and Intercultural Health (CSI) of the University of Bologna, the Municipality, the Local Health Authority, and the University teaching hospital Policlinico S.Orsola-Malpighi from 2017 to 2022.

The project was conceived as an interdisciplinary, multi-method action-research, built through cycles of data collection, reflection, and action, and involved three intertwined phases:

  • Phase 1: epidemiological study on the distribution of social and health indicators across the 90 statistical areas of the city of Bologna;
  • Phase 2: ethnographic research in 6 city areas, selected among those most exposed to inequalities.; the research focused on identifying, in each area and together with key actors of local welfare services and communities, the specific determinants involved in the re/production of health inequalities;
  • Phase 3: co-design of experimental interventions to address the detected determinants and promote health and equity in 3 of the 6 areas involved in phase 2.

The project results include a city-wide system for monitoring health inequalities, a consolidated method to plan for integrated health promotion interventions rooted in a careful analysis of local health determinants, and 3 concrete examples of such interventions.
