Welcome to the first SHEtalk in 2023!
Dr Eva Spišiaková is REWIRE research fellow at University of Vienna, Austria, where she is exploring the history of disability and queer representation via the medium of translation. Here is a quote from her about the society benefit from her research:
"Language is one of our most powerful tools in understanding how we create societal concepts such as disability, but these views inevitably vary between languages and cultures. A close study of the retranslations of the same source text – in my case, Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and Shakespeare’s Richard III – which prominently feature descriptions of disabled bodies, help me to understand the historical changes that underpin these concepts and detangle the pathways that led to the current situation. Through this, I hope to gain a better understanding of how different cultures talk about disability, which in turn will help fellow translators to make informed decisions that respect the dignity and agency of disabled people."
What are SHEtalks
SHEtalks are a serial of informal research seminars held at Center for Sustainable Healthcare Education at the Sustainable Health Unit (SUSTAINIT), University of Oslo. SHEtalks are research lunch lectures. The spring 2023 program was put together by researcher Gabriela Saldanha. Seminars take place at Thursdays at noon (GTM+1) unless otherwise specified.
