Climate change and mental health

Climate change is pressing global challenge. Extreme weather events like storms, floods, heatwaves, and wildfires are escalating in frequency, duration, and intensity and are affecting human health and wellbeing. In this talk, I draw on interdisciplinary research to show how climate related stressors are already undermining the mental health of populations across the world including among children.

These impacts begin before birth and continue across development, operating with additive, interactive, and cumulative effects to increase mental health vulnerability across the life course. I conclude with a discussion of ways to conceptualise, measure, and mitigate this burden.
