Hilde's letter
For the last month or so I have been in Istanbul as a visiting scholar at the department of translation studies at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul.
The motivation for this visit was to collaborate with Assistant Professor Jan Buts at the department of translation studies, who specialises in corpus linguistics and has been very involved in the development of the Oslo Medical Corpus.
These four weeks have involved a great many interesting discussions and opportunities to learn from each other, and has led to the start of a joint paper examining the impact of the sustainable development goals on Norwegian development aid documents.
Translation knowledge
The visit is now coming to an end, and yesterday it was time for me to give the mandatory guest lecture. As the host department work on issues of translation from a linguistic perspective, I chose to focus the lecture on the translation metaphor in medicine and in social and cultural studies. This led to a lot of interesting and thought-provoking comments and questions from the attending translation scholars who could approach the material from the perspective of translation studies proper. As I prepare for returning to Oslo and my colleagues at SHE, I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to experience a new city, a new university, and a new and exciting transdisciplinary dialogue!
