Strategic Plan for the Sustainable Health Unit (SUSTAINIT)

The University of Oslo (UiO) is a leading European university with an important role to play in realizing an equitable, healthy, and sustainable world. The multidisciplinary Sustainable Health Unit (SUSTAINIT) at the UiO Faculty of Medicine will aid UiO in this endeavour.

SUSTAINIT advances critical thinking and multidisciplinary models for sustainable health research, education, and capacity building.

The ambitions of SUSTAINIT are to

  • foster student-centered initiatives, multisectoral collaboration, and multidisciplinary research and education in service to equity, health, and sustainability
  • be a knowledge cluster for research, education, and capacity building for sustainable health
  • facilitate knowledge-based dialogue and inform public opinion and policy pertaining to sustainability and health
  • contribute to local and global sustainable health agendas, including sustainable and equitable solutions in health care

SUSTAINIT will mobilize synergies between research, education, and capacity building for health and sustainability at UiO, locally, and globally through the three centres that it comprises

  1. The Centre for Global Health is dedicated to strengthening global health competencies and research, and to national and international capacity building and collaboration.
  2. The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare Education is a Centre for Excellence in Education with a mandate to foster innovative student-driven and high-quality education for sustainable development, especially in the health sciences.
  3. The Centre for Pandemics and One Health Research is established with the aim of leveraging pandemic expertise and supporting multidisciplinary pandemic and One Health research.

By bringing these centres together as a cohesive, multidisciplinary unit with an explicit dedication to health and sustainability, SUSTAINIT will create novel opportunities for multidisciplinary research, education, networking, and capacity building. This will entail integrating the medical, human, social, natural, and technological sciences, and contributing to health and sustainability agendas aimed at an equitable and just environment at UiO and beyond.

SUSTAINIT will add value by

  • providing a forum for academic discussion about pandemic and one health research, global capacity building, and high-quality health education from the perspective of sustainability
  • enriching the academic discussion of sustainability and health by emphasizing equity and distributive justice
  • harnessing the synergies between education, research, and capacity building to tackle complex and pressing global health and sustainability challenges
  • challenging the paradigms that maintain current equity, health, and sustainability crises, and fostering changemakers for an equitable, healthy, and sustainable world
